Hydrodemolition uses high pressure water in place of percussive tools to remove concrete, asphalt, or other materials from a surface. It is primarily used for surface preparation or to remove concrete from a structure where the integrity of the reinforcement needs to be retained. Hydrodemolition is carried out using robots or hand lancing techniques.

  • Hand Lancing
    • Handheld hydrodemolition is often used for small scale concrete removal where precision is needed, or work is to be conducted within a confined space. Hand lance operators can offer a high degree of accuracy.
  • Robotic Hydrodemolition
    • Hydrodemolition robots save time and improve safety by eliminating the labour-intensive use of hand tools and offer faster concrete removal. They keep the operator at a safe distance from the working face.

The benefits of hydrodemolition can be placed into two groups: structural benefits that improve the quality of the repair, and environmental benefits that improve the quality of the workplace.

Structural Benefits

  • A rough, irregular surface profile is created to provide an excellent mechanical bond for repair materials
  • Surface micro-fracturing is eliminated
  • Exposed aggregates are not fractured or split
  • Low strength and/or deteriorated concrete is selectively removed
  • Minimal vibration
  • Reinforcement is cleaned, eliminating the need for a second step of surface preparation
  • Reinforcement and other embedded elements are undamaged

 Environmental Benefits

  • Minimized disruption to users of occupied space by significantly reducing transmitted sound and vibration through the structure
  • Increased speed of concrete removal
  • Minimal dust
  • Robotic units reduce labour
