Equipment supplier Jetter Conversions is promoting water jetting standards by offering customers safety kits containing essential items identified in WJA codes of practice and training courses.

The novel idea simplifies the process of preparing operatives to work safely and assures contractors that their teams have the equipment they need to be compliant with WJA standards and safety regulations.

WJA Chairman Lee O’Callaghan has praised Jetter Conversions, a WJA member, for the initiative, saying it shows promoting the standards set by the WJA’s codes of practice go hand-in-hand with commercial success.

Helping raise bar on safety

He added: “The Jetter Conversions team could see there was a need to make it easier to put into practice the learning from the WJA’s water jetting courses and our codes of practice out in the field.

“With each operative having their own water jetting safety kit, they have the basic equipment needed to hand to work safely and productively. It’s a brilliant idea that also helps to market the business.

“These are just the sorts of initiatives we want to work with other WJA members to promote. By building the WJA’s codes of practice into their service offerings, they will become more trusted by customers and will help us raise the bar on water jetting standards across the board.”

Jetting Conversions builds, services and repairs van pack jetting units, primarily for the drainage and water utility industries. The company also supplies a range of other equipment, including Rigid mechanical cleaning machines and Milwaukee tools.

Quicker to source essential safety kit

Aaron Cooke, Head of Manufacturing at Jetter Conversions, said customers have responded positively to the safety kits, and could see their value, both to contractors and to operatives.

He explained: “They contain items of equipment contractors might otherwise have to buy from different suppliers. We’ve brought them together so it’s quicker and easier to source this essential kit.”

Jetter Conversions has created two types of safety kit, both competitively priced, with WJA members offered an 15% discount.

The jetting operator safety kit contains essential PPE items, including waterproof overalls, a safety hat with ear defenders, and a pair of blue gauntlet gloves.

The jetting machine basics safety kit contains equipment needed to operate a jetting machine – with a jetting bar, a safety shroud, a tiger tail, and a safety hose.

Backing WJA training learning

The WJA’s City & Guilds accredited water jetting courses, and its codes of practice, identify all these items of PPE and safety equipment and explain how they are essential to the delivery of safe water jetting services.

Aaron Cooke said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for our customers to be successful in business. So, helping them to deliver safe and effective services, literally out of the box, makes perfect sense to us.”

The Water Jetting Association is the trade body for the UK’s water jetting industry. Its accredited training courses include a one-day safety awareness course and a range of one-day practical modules.

Operatives must pass the safety awareness course and at least one practice module to become a WJA certified water jetting operative, then pass a three-yearly refresher course to maintain certification.

The WJA maintains three codes of practice, recognised by the Health and Safety Executive as setting the standard for water jetting – the Blue Code for high pressure and ultra-high pressure water jetting, the Red Code for water jetting in drains and sewers, and the Purple Code for using pressure washers.
